Summer is calling. People are drifting out, flying in and out, disappearing to the sea, the mountains, families, festivals, silence, or other rhythms. At newpolyphonies too, people will be moving through the coming months at different speeds.

But honestly: things will not become entirely quiet. Behind the scenes, we are making plans, writing, and building on the fruits of the past years, with a view to a new structural funding application for the period 2028–2032.

Since 2023, newpolyphonies has received modest structural support from the Flemish Community. This has meant a great deal: it has allowed us to support my artistic practice within a broader framework, and to place the independent artistic work of the YouYou Group on a more sustainable foundation.

Since then, we have created ten productions. Nocturnes for a Society, Hamel and Jubel stand high in the banner of our young organisation. We have worked with many artists from different disciplines, toured, and found new ways of creating locally and contextually, as with A Song for Everyone in Romania, and through walks and work processes in Japan, Korea, Australia and London.

Many of our works begin from communities, or create connections with groups, places, contexts, biotopes and audiences. At the centre are practices in which vocal art and society mutually nourish one another: slow processes, with many tentacles reaching deep into a landscape.

Together with my colleagues Arezoo Khazanbeig, responsible for the YouYou Group, and Charline Stoelzaad, business manager, we continue to hold a steady course. Applications are catapults into the future: one firm foot in what has been built, and a leap towards what still needs to take shape.

Have a good summer!

Myriam, Arezoo and Charline

MYRIAM VAN IMSCHOOT & COLLABORATORS

URGE
NNOI CAMP, Zernikow
10/07

Myriam Van Imschoot is part of the sound poetry duo MM, together with her partner Marcus Bergner. At this experimental music festival in a forest, they will present a set including their iconic sound performance URGE, alongside more recent poetic work developed last winter during a residency at Temperance Hall, Melbourne, in December. They seem to break language with a battering ram, but from the inside out, in search of new forms of communication. Info

UNSOLICITED BUDDHIST QUOTE
Online

Crank is a Melbourne-based band that regularly invites artists, poets and musicians for recording sessions in an intimate setting. You can hear the result of a session with MM on this blog, with two freshly released tracks: Unsolicited Buddhist Quote and We Were Walking. Info

NEWPOLYPHONIES REWIRED
NTGent
1,2,3/10

The installation that Myriam Van Imschoot developed together with HYOID and RIF is a feat of floating ingenuity — quite literally. Twenty small loudspeakers rise and fall with the audience listening among them. The soundscapes they emit shift along with the heights and depths, until you lose your bearings in a tumbling listening experience. Info

YOUYOU GROUP & COLLABORATORS

YOUYOU GROUP, GLOSSA AVEC KINOTITA IN MÜLLHEIM

Park, Müllheim

27/06 + 10/07

YouYou Group is part of the platform KINOTITA for female composers and voice artists working with.in big groups. Multiple voice and plural vocality are a craft of their own. How do groups organise sounds, what knowledges do they embody, how do they survive and thrive? In Müllheim YouYou Group got together with the Köln ensemble Glossa for the second exchange this year. They performed also together on 27 June in Zongtage, a park festival organised by Makroskope on Avantgarde music and expanded song. Glossa will perform again at Radio Zong in the same park on 10 July at 19:00.  Info

SEGEN EXTENDED
KVS, Brussels
19/09

Building on the quartet SEGEN, this extended version has grown into an explosive performance in which silence, echo and loud trilling sounds enter into a charged relationship with one another. A call and response between human beings, space, and everything that moves in between. The performance is part of Cry (no) more. Info
