YouYou Group
YouYou Group is a Brussels-based vocal collective founded in 2014. At the heart of its practice is the youyou, also known as zaghareed or ululation, a vocal practice rooted in the diverse cultures of Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and carried across generations and diasporas.
Bringing together performers and practitioners from different cultural, artistic and generational backgrounds, YouYou works with voice, sound, movement and listening. The group draws on inherited vocal practices while continuously reinventing and reimagining them, exploring the space between individual voices and collective experience, transmission and experimentation, memory and invention.
YouYou creates performances, publications, workshops and gatherings, moving between theatres, museums, festivals, public spaces and unconventional locations. Each context becomes part of the work, shaping how voices are heard, how bodies come together and how encounters unfold.
Based in Brussels and connected to an international network of artists, collectives and communities, YouYou develops through collaboration and exchange across borders. Its practice carries vocal practices, experiences and forms of knowledge into new contexts, allowing them to evolve through each encounter.
YouYou Group explores the possibilities of collective voice, creating spaces where voices meet, overlap and propose new ways of listening, expressing and being together.
